Ingredients
1 1/2 cup whole wheat flour, plus more for the floured surface
2 eggs
2 Tbsp creamy peanut butter (I like 100% peanuts creamy peanut butter, but you can use any as long as it doesn’t contain xylitol)
1/2 cup fresh blueberries, halved
1/4 to 3/8 cup of warm water
Directions
Preheat your oven to 350°F.
Place parchment paper on your cookie sheet.
Add the eggs, peanut butter, and 1/4 cup of water in a medium-sized mixing bowl. Mix until well combined.
Stir in the blueberries.
Next, add in the flour.
Mix until well combined, you may need to switch from mixing with a spoon to using your hands. If the dough is still too dry, add a little more water, a tablespoon at a time until the dough is workable but not too sticky.
Chill for 30 minutes to help with the stickiness. This won’t help if the dough is really sticky, but it will if it is only a little sticky.
After the dough has chilled, use a rolling pin to roll it out on a floured surface. You want it 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick.
Use your favorite cookie cutters to cut out shapes in the dough. I really like these bone and paw shaped cookie cutters. If you don’t have cookie cutters a table knife or pizza cutter will work to cut the dough.
Place the cut shapes on your prepared baking sheet, leaving some room between each treat.
Put the tray into your preheated oven and bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until the treats start to turn golden brown. Thicker treats will take longer than thinner treats.
Keep a close eye on them toward the end to avoid burning.
Once the dog treats are done baking, remove them from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack.
After they are completely cooled, give one to your dog and store the rest in the fridge in an airtight container for up to a week.
You can store these at room temperature for a day or two, but I don’t recommend it as the blueberries may not dry completely and could mold quickly.
For longer shelf life, place in an airtight, freezer safe container, like a freezer bag, and store in the freezer for up to three months. Let them thaw before giving them to your dog.
Tips
Don’t forget to use the parchment paper. I did and half the treats stuck to the pan. This made clean up a pain. Though my dogs didn’t care that the treats were damaged, they didn’t care what they looked like as long as they got to eat them. 😊
Adjust the size of the treats for your dog. This makes giving them proper portion sizes easier as you won’t need to break the treat up to give it to them.
Always check with your vet before giving your dog new food, especially if your dog has medical concerns. And don’t make this recipe if your dog is allergic or sensitive to any of the ingredients.
Feeding Recommendations
When it comes to spoiling your dog with homemade treats like baked blueberry treats, it’s important to remember their health.
Treats are meant to be a bonus in your pet’s diet, not replace regular meals.
Treats are supposed to make up no more than 10% of your dog’s daily caloric intake.
This ensures that your dog’s diet remains nutritious and complete.
Remember, homemade treats like these should be considered extra. Keep your vet in the loop if your dog has specific dietary needs or conditions.
I hope your dog enjoys these DIY dog treats as much as my dogs do!
