Sharing is caring!

Most dogs love getting treats. I know my dogs, Luna and Morgan, love it when I give them treats.

They also absolutely love pineapple and strawberries. So why not make them a new treat that combines strawberries and pineapple into a single treat?

Strawberry Pineapple Frozen Dog Treats Recipe

Homemade frozen strawberry pineapple dog treats are easy to make with only 3 ingredients.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup fresh strawberries, chopped
  • 1 cup fresh pineapple, peeled and chopped
  • 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt

Preparation Steps:

Blend the ingredients: In a blender, combine the strawberries, pineapple, and Greek yogurt. Blend until you achieve a smooth puree consistency.

Pour into molds: Pour the fruit mixture into silicone molds or ice cube trays. I like to use these paw and bone shaped molds. Besides being cute, the two different shapes give me two sizes of treats, perfect for my two sizes of dogs.

Freeze the treats: Place the molds or trays in the freezer and let the treats freeze for at least 3-4 hours, or until solid. I tend to let them sit overnight just to be sure they are frozen.

Give one to your dog: Once the treats are frozen, remove them from the molds and let your dog enjoy this cool and fruity reward.

Store the remaining treats: Place the remaining treats in an airtight container, like a freezer bag, and store them in your freezer.

Tips for Making Frozen Treats for Dogs

Place the silicone mold on a baking sheet before pouring the fruit mixture into it. This makes it easier to move from your counter to the freezer.

The recipe calls for fresh fruit, but you can use frozen as well. Just make sure you buy the frozen fruit that has no additional ingredients. Or freeze your own fruit when it’s in season to use later in the year.

Use only plain Greek yogurt to avoid any additional ingredients that may be bad for dogs that can be in flavored yogurt. Also, dogs typically tolerate Greek yogurt better than regular yogurt.

Benefits of Strawberry Pineapple Frozen Dog Treats

Giving your dog treats with strawberries and pineapple has many benefits.

Nutritional Benefits of Strawberries and Pineapple

Strawberries are a great source of vitamin C, fiber, and antioxidants, making them a healthy treat for your dog, when fed in moderation.

Pineapples are a nutrient-dense snack that contains vitamin C and other vitamins and minerals like vitamin B6, folate, manganese, etc

Together, these fruits provide a flavorful and beneficial combination for your pet.

As with any new foods, if you have questions about giving them to your dog, talk to your vet first. This is especially important if your dog has any health issues or food sensitivities.

Pineapple May Help Prevent Poop Eating

One surprising benefit of pineapple is its ability to prevent dogs from eating their poop, a behavior known as coprophagia.

Pineapples contain the enzyme bromelain and this enzyme can change the taste and smell of a dog’s waste. This makes it less appealing for them to eat. Though, personally, I would think it being poop would be enough of a deterrent (my dog Luna disagrees).

Unfortunately, this does not work for all dogs. It works for Luna, but my friend’s dog didn’t care one bit when she gave him pineapple to prevent him from eating his poop.

If you have a dog that eats a different dog’s poop, give the pineapple to the dog whose poop is being eaten. Luna eats both her own and Morgan’s poop, so they both have to have some pineapple to prevent her from doing this.

But they don’t complain, they both love their pineapple!

Benefits of Homemade Dog Treats

Making homemade treats for your dog lets you control what goes into them.

You can choose only healthy ingredients that your dog likes instead of hoping they will like what you purchased.

Making your own treats also means you can customize their size for what you want to use them for. Need training treats, make the treats tiny. Want a bigger treat, make them larger.

If you have dogs of different sizes like I do, you can also make two sizes of treats. Then you don’t have to constantly break the treat smaller for the little dog or try to sneak the bigger dog an extra treat since they can eat more than the little dog.

Homemade dog treats give you ultimate control of both what goes in the treats as well as the size of the treat.

Just remember, no matter whether you give your dog store bought treats or homemade treats, they still should not have too many treats in a day. Even healthy treats are still treats and need to be given in moderation.
