How to Make Blueberry Applesauce Dog Treats

Blueberry applesauce dog treats are a delicious option for your furry friend and are simple to make with only a handful of ingredients.

Ingredients Needed

Before you start, gather these simple ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup applesauce: Choose unsweetened applesauce.
  • 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour: You may need extra for dusting and adjusting dough consistency.
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup chopped fresh blueberries: Quarter the blueberries or a rough chop to about quartered size.

Directions

Preheat your oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup.

Add the applesauce, chopped blueberries, and egg to a large bowl.

Mix until well blended.

The wet ingredients mixed together.

Add the flour a cup at a time. The dough will get more difficult to mix as you add in the flour. It may still be a little sticky after adding all the flour.

Chill the dough in the fridge for about 30 minutes. This will help with the stickiness.

After the dough has chilled, roll out the dough on a floured surface to a thickness of about 1/8 to 1/4 inch. A rolling pin makes this process easier than with your hands.

The dough rolled out ready to be cut.

Use small cookie cutters or table knife to cut out the treats. Bone or paw shapes are super cute for dog treats or simply cut in squares.

Arrange them on the prepared baking sheet.

I forgot to use parchment paper when I baked these for pictures and regretted it when I tried to take them off the pan. Several stuck and made the pan a pain to wash.

Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

Let the treats cool on a wire rack to prevent any burnt tongues.

Storage Tips

Once your dog treats are made, you’ll want them to stay fresh for as long as possible:

  • Room Temperature: Store in an airtight container for up to a couple of days. Ensure they’re fully cooled before storing to avoid moisture buildup.
  • Refrigerator: For extended freshness, keep them in the fridge. They’ll last up to one week.
  • Freezer: If you’ve made a large batch, these treats can be frozen. Freeze in a single layer on a baking sheet before transferring them to a freezer-safe bag, where they can stay fresh for up to three months.

Tips for Making Applesauce Blueberry Dog Treats

Line your cookie sheet with parchment paper. These will stick to the pan otherwise.

Do not skip chilling the dough, it makes it much easier to work with.

Flour the surface you are using to roll the dough out and flour the rolling pin. You may need to add more flour to the surface if you roll out the extra dough after cutting the shapes out.

Make the treats the size you want for your dog. Use smaller cookie cutters for small dogs. Or cut into small bite-sized pieces the size you want to give to your dog.

Feeding Guidelines and Recommendations

When it comes to spoiling your canine companion with homemade treats like blueberry applesauce biscuits, it’s crucial to be mindful of their health.

Treats are meant to enhance your pet’s diet, not replace regular meals. Here’s how you can keep your dog happily munching without tipping the scales.

How Many Treats Can Your Dog Have?

Deciding how many treats to give your dog isn’t just about making them happy. It’s about maintaining a balanced diet. Veterinarians suggest that treats should constitute no more than 10% of your dog’s daily caloric intake

This ensures that your dog’s primary diet remains nutritious and complete.

Remember, homemade treats like these should be considered extra. Keep your vet in the loop if your dog has specific dietary needs or conditions.
