Strawberry ice cream is enjoyed by many people. But what about our dogs? Can they share in this delicious treat?
Unfortunately, the answer is no, dogs should not have human ice cream.
But what you can do, is make a batch of homemade ice cream for dogs.
The recipe below was created with only dog-friendly ingredients.
It has no added sugar or sugar substitutes that ice cream for humans has so much of.

Ingredients for Dog-Safe Strawberry Ice Cream

- 1 cup (about 10 whole) strawberries
- ½ cup Greek yogurt
- ¼ cup water
Strawberries
Strawberries are the star ingredient in this homemade dog ice cream.
They provide natural sweetness and are a great vitamin C and fiber source.
You can use either fresh or frozen strawberries in this recipe.
When choosing frozen strawberries make sure to get the bag that is 100% strawberries.
If using fresh strawberries, make sure to wash them thoroughly and then remove the stems.
Greek yogurt
Greek yogurt is an essential ingredient for the ice cream base.
It is high in protein, calcium, and probiotics which can be beneficial for your dog’s digestive system.
Plain Greek yogurt is the best choice to use in this recipe because flavored yogurts can have added sugars and other ingredients that aren’t good for dogs.
Greek yogurt is used as most dogs tolerate it better than regular yogurt.
If your dog is extremely sensitive to dairy products, it would be better to make them dairy-free ice cream for dogs.
Water
Water is added to assist in the blending of the other ingredients.
I made this recipe with frozen strawberries and needed the water to get the consistency I was looking for in these treats.
Without the water, my blender would not puree the strawberries, it just threw them to the side of the blender.
Equipment
- A blender
- Measuring cups
- A spoon
- A small rubber scraper or spatula
- An ice cube tray or silicone mold
Directions
First, make sure your ingredients are ready. If using frozen strawberries, measure them straight from the bag. If using fresh strawberries, wash them then cut the stems off.

Next, you will add the ingredients to the blender. I like to use my Ninja blender, but any blender that can handle frozen fruit will work.

Blend the mixture until smooth.
Once the mixture is smooth it’s time to fill the molds or ice cube trays. I prefer to spoon the mixture into the tray as I can control how much comes out of the blender more easily.

Once the molds are filled put them in the freezer. If you are using a silicone mold, placing it on a cookie sheet makes the transfer to the freezer easier.
Freeze for at least 4 hours, or ideally overnight, to ensure the treats are fully frozen.

Once your strawberry dog ice cream is frozen remove it from the mold and give one to your dog.
The remaining treats can be stored in an airtight container or plastic freezer bag in the freezer.

As you can see, both Luna and Morgan loved taste-testing their homemade strawberry ice cream for dogs.

Tips
Here is more information about why dogs shouldn’t have ice cream.
If you are using a silicone mold, placing it on a cookie sheet before filling it makes the transfer to the freezer easier.
Always consult your vet before giving your dog any new foods, especially if they have allergies or digestive issues.
