Another winter storm day! Today it’s a blizzard, last week it was extreme cold. It’s so bad outside that they have closed the interstates running outside of town for about 100 miles both North and West of town. The rest of the area is under a no travel advisory.

It’s been snowing since yesterday around midday and is supposed to keep snowing until sometime this afternoon. Though with the winds we have we won’t be able to tell whether it has stopped snowing or not. The wind is currently at 28 mph and are supposed to get stronger.

That makes our -6°F feel like -33°F. The winds are supposed to get better late tonight and tomorrow but our temps are supposed to get worse. Windchills are predicted to be around -50°F tomorrow morning. I wonder what they will do about school tomorrow?

There is so much snow out there now (especially drifted snow) that my downstairs windows are becoming snowed in. We can barely see out one window and a second window isn’t much better. Pretty soon my living room windows will seem like there is no window there, the snow will have the whole thing blocked off.

And, of course, with the cold temps that we have with this snow, my patio door won’t open again. Poor Luna is acting like we are punishing her by not allowing her out back. She just wants to run around the yard and play in the snow, but we can’t get the door open to let her out.

Thankfully Luna hasn’t been as crazy with energy recently, but I’m not sure why that is. Is she finally growing out of the puppy energy? Or is she depressed about not being able to play outside? Either way I’m glad that she isn’t running around crazy slamming into walls like last week. Though I don’t want a depressed dog either. We have been trying to play with her and she loves chasing her toys, but it’s not the same as running around the yard and jumping in the snow.

It’s supposed to “warm” up into the single digits above zero by Sunday with teens above for a couple of days. So far, they are saying we will stay above zero for highs all week next week.

It’s kinda sad that I am calling single digits above zero a warm up. But maybe it will be “warm” enough to get my door open for Luna. One can hope…

The hardest part about snow days is finding stuff to do. We can’t go outside because of the weather (other than taking the dogs out to potty), so it’s indoor activities. My kids are 10, 14, and 16 and in some ways that makes it harder. Other than screen time, none of them are really interested in the same thing. And, of course, none of them really want to help with the cleaning that COULD be done.

CJ (10 yr old) colored some mandalas this morning and then spent some time reading. Now she is watching a disc of Naruto with her brother. I can thank their uncle for getting them into that… Other than that, she hasn’t mentioned what she wants to do today. But when I mention cleaning her room, she isn’t bored enough to do that.

AJ (14 yr old) spends most of his time in his room. He likes to look through his Magic the Gathering cards and sometimes resorts them into new decks. He also spends a lot of time working on some Pathfinder campaign thing. I’m not really sure what that is other than a game he plays with several friends. Right now, he’s watching Naruto with CJ, but other than that about the only time I get him out of his room is to help with taking the dogs out. And he is good about helping his dad move the snow.

AM (16 yr old) is the hardest to get out of her room. She spends most of her time playing on her phone or reading and cuddling with Allie. Sometimes she will color some mandalas as well. As long as she didn’t leave it at school, she will also practice her flute. She will venture out of her room to play Minecraft on the Xbox and sometimes to bake. Her favorite things to bake are banana bread or muffins and cookies. She also helps out with the laundry, but that only takes a few minutes and she is back in her room.

Part of my day will be spent working on this blog and I will try to find stuff to do that isn’t on a screen for the rest of the day. I have a puzzle I’ve been working on (and trying to get my kids to help with) and I have plenty of sewing to do. I may spend some of the day reading, but I’m not sure on that yet. I’ll also spend time cuddling with the dogs and cat. So far Luna spent some time laying between CJ and me and managed to touch us both. Now Luna is resting her head on my feet. Morgan may cuddle with me, but she spends much of her time hiding from Luna, even when Luna is sleeping.

This afternoon I am planning on trying to get the kids to play a game with me. We have so many games, several brand new, but don’t always get to playing them. I’ve been trying to do a family game night each week, but we get busy and pretty soon it’s too late to start a game. I’m hoping to eventually get through all our games, so I will know which ones no one likes. My game closet is getting crowded and if there’s games no one likes, I’d like to get rid of them.

With how varied everyone’s interests are, I don’t foresee getting rid of too many, if any, of the games. But I want to try. If nothing else, it gets us to spend some quality family time together.

The only one missing today is Hubby. He works for a big box store and they never close. If he can get to work, he works. He managed to get there today, though when he called (I worry), he said the roads were horrible. Lots of blowing and drifting snow making visibility really low.

It took him and AJ at least 15 minutes to dig out his car this morning. Unfortunately, when they dug him out, they increased the size of the drift behind my car. It currently looks to be at least 3 feet deep. It’s a good thing I don’t have to go anywhere today. Though after seeing one car get stuck in the road a couple houses down from me, I don’t think I’d be going anywhere even if I could get out of my driveway.

How’s the weather where you’re at today? What are your favorite things to do on a snow day?
